TMJ Pain Relief in Princeton NJ area

The temporomandibular joint, also called your TMJ, functions as a sliding axis linking your jawbone to your skull. There are numerous issues that can be caused by a TMJ disorder, which may cause anything from mild soreness to far more serious problems. If you have reason to believe that you are experiencing an issue with your temporomandibular joint, you should reach out to Dr. Michael Cortese D.M.D. Dr. Cortese is a maxillofacial prosthodontist who is specially equipped to diagnose and treat TMJ disorders and provides treatment for TMJ pain relief to patients in the Princeton, NJ area.

Dr. Cortese will evaluate your temporomandibular joint when you come in and, together with the patient, develop a plan that has an end goal of pain eradication. In addition to personalized pain management and recovery plans, there are several practices you can employ on your own, which will assist as well. TMJ problems can often resolve on their own over time, but these therapy tips will help you find relief.

Moist Heat

Applying moist heat can help temporarily relieve any immediate discomfort associated with TMJ disorder. Using a heat pack or hot water bottle and a towel is all that is needed. Take a warm and moist towel and wrap it around the heat pack/hot water bottle and apply to the area of discomfort. This will improve functionality in that area and reduce the pain. You do need to be careful when handling heated products so that you do not accidentally burn yourself.

Ice works wonders in dealing with inflammation and when used for pain management. It’s important to note that ice should never be placed directly on the skin, but instead should be wrapped in a clean cloth before being applied. Keep the ice wrapped in the cloth the entire duration of application, which should be no more than 10-15 minutes at a time.

Soft Diet

Getting relief to your jaw can do a lot when dealing with soreness due to TMJ disorder. You will want to avoid foods that require excess chewing. For instance, having a nice juicy steak isn’t the best idea, no matter how delicious it may be. Also avoid hard or crunchy foods. Soft or blended foods should be eaten instead. Also, when eating, make sure to not stretch your mouth too far to accommodate biting such as you might when eating an apple or corn on the cob.

Jaw Exercises

Recent studies have shown that jaw exercises promote quicker recovery from a TMJ disorder than many other available options. Working in slow & gentle jaw exercises into your day can greatly increase both healing and jaw mobility. Ask your doctor about some specific exercises you perform daily which will benefit your situation.

Some other habits you can develop that will help with your pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorder is to sleep on your side utilizing a pillow between your neck and shoulder for support. Throughout the day, try to maintain a relaxed facial state. Make sure your lips are relaxed with teeth slightly separated. There are other tips and habits your doctor can suggest.

If you are seeking assistance with pain management related to TMJ disorder, give Dr. Michael Cortese D.M.D. a call at (609) 552-0800 today to schedule a consultation.
